VIRTUAL
BUSINESS
FIRM
About the Firm
Because DMACC strongly believes that today’s graduates require the skills necessary to compete effectively in the contemporary business world, the college offers a unique and cutting-edge business course called the “Virtual Business Firm.”
This concept was started in European schools several years ago. DMACC’s Virtual Business Firm simulates the operation of an actual business rather than using case studies or role-playing.
This exciting and challenging course gives students the opportunity to create business and trade with other virtual firms throughout the world. There are more than 4,000 other institutional firms in the network. DMACC students will work as team members in a state-of-the-art facility and will buy and sell their products within the network.
There will also be an annual trade fair where students can display and promote their products.
Partners with Business
Collaborating with members of the business community, students work with a partner firm to create a business model. Using this model, the “employees” shadow the actual business functions and specific tasks of the partner firm. With coaching and information gathered from the partner firm, students operate a parallel business in the classroom.
“Real-Time” Business
Students enrolled in theVirtual Business Firm course engage in the day-to-day realities of operating a business. Linked by technology for communication, each Virtual Firm conducts all of the operations necessary in running any business: accounting, purchasing, marketing, human resources and general business skills. The most desirable attributes and best practices of running a competitive business in today’s marketplace are developed and honed as students decide how to operate effectively the Virtual Business Firm.
Ready for Business
During the semester-long course, students develop marketable employment skills, gain insight into the global market economy, and enhance their critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills. They also learn the concept and value of teamwork. The most up-to-date business technology tools, such as networked computers, video conferencing and the internet, help students put business “theory” into business “practice.”
